MDF Wall Panel Frequently Asked Questions

Can MDF wall panels be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

Yes, our paintable MDF wall panels are moisture-resistant and suitable for use throughout your home, including your bathroom and kitchen. However, our black MDF wall panelling is not moisture-resistant. If your panels will be in direct contact with water, consider choosing one of our waterproof panels.

Can MDF wall panels be installed near heat sources?

If your MDF wall panelling will sit directly next to a hob or electric fire, we recommend selecting our fire rated MDF panels.

Do MDF wall panels improve insulation or soundproofing?

MDF wall panels can slightly improve sound absorption by reducing echo and vibration, particularly in living rooms and around media walls. While MDF wall panelling isn’t a substitute for professional insulation, it can enhance acoustic comfort when combined with acoustic backing or insulation boards.

Why do some MDF wall panels have a green core?

Many of our MDF wall panels are made from Hidrofugo moisture-resistant MDF, which naturally has a green core. This does not affect the finished appearance or how you paint your panels.

Do you offer MDF wall panel samples?

Yes, we provide samples for all our MDF wall panels. These are delivered free of charge within two working days, helping you visualise how your wall panelling will look in your space before ordering. View all samples here.

Do MDF wall panels need to be painted?

Our paintable MDF wall panels arrive unfinished, so you’ll need to prime and paint them for your preferred finish. Our black MDF wall panelling doesn’t need painting, though applying a water-based PU lacquer gives a premium clear finish.

How do I install MDF wall panels?

Secure each panel to the wall using grab adhesive (and nails if needed), sanding lightly if necessary and sealing any gaps. Then, apply a coat of prime, followed by your chosen paint in thin, even layers, allowing each coat to dry fully before the next. See our full step by step installation guide here.

Are MDF wall panels suitable for uneven walls?

Yes. When installing MDF wall panelling on an uneven wall, use a high-grab adhesive and nails (if necessary) to ensure the panel fixes securely. For very uneven surfaces, battens can be installed first to create a perfectly flat base.

Can MDF wall panels be cut at home?

Absolutely. Our MDF wall panels are easy to cut using standard tools such as a circular saw, track saw, or jigsaw. Always measure carefully and cut slowly to achieve clean edges.

Alternatively, you can use our cut-to-size service for a perfect fit.

How do I miter MDF wall panels?

To miter our MDF wall panels, you’ll need to cut the edges at a 45° angle, so they fit neatly together. The best tool for the job is a mitre saw, as it gives you clean, accurate cuts. You can also use a table saw with an adjustable blade angle, or a track saw if you're working with longer panels. Once cut, use clamps and wood glue to secure the joints, and lightly sand the edges for a smooth, professional look.
